When I started painting my paintings were very realistic in nature. Over the past 10 years, I have found that my paintings have gradually lost shape and have become more and more abstract. Like Mark Rothko, I have a growing interest with form, space, and color. He described his early painting method as "unknown adventures in an unknown space," free from "direct association with any particular, and the passion of organism." I also believe this to be true. I find myself constantly experimenting, playing with textures, utilizing various mediums, asking questions and searching for answers in my paintings. Before I paint, I ask the canvas, "who are you? what do you want to say to me?" The art comes from a deep place and I am just a vehicle in the process of creating what it wants to be. ~ Monika
